Blue Badges are an important asset to people with mobility problems; they are also very attractive to thieves and fraudsters. Abuse, both in terms of fraudulent possession by those not entitled to a badge, or misuse of badges which are legitimately held, has dramatically increased in recent years. It is claimed that a third of Britain's two million disabled badges are being used fraudulently - by able-bodied people wanting preferential car parking spaces. This is damaging in two important aspects: first it results in people with serious disabilities being prevented from using the parking facilities provided for them; and secondly it has the effect of bringing the scheme into disrepute. This common perception of widespread abuse could lead to the public showing less respect for the scheme.
The central London authorities are committed to tackling the problem of Blue Badge abuse, and will take positive action whenever and wherever they become aware of it. If you know of any incidents where the Blue Badge scheme is being abused or where the badges are being misused, please let us know.
Any information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
